There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling.

Catching them Young....

The Las Gaviotas junior school in La Herradura has sprouted some green fingers, as it now farms its own vegetable and herb plot.

The scheme was organised by the education association, Nueve Lunas so that schoolchildren can see and get involved with ecology and the environment; appreciating their importance.

The plot is located next to the school itself on a bit of land ceded by Vivero La Herradura and the necessary gardening tools were supplied by the Town Hall.

The kids will have the chance to plant, cabbage, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and peppers, as well as aromatic herbs, amongst them ones that act as natural insect repellents, explained Carlos Ferrón, who is an agronomist that collaborates with the Environmental Department at the Town Hall.

The Town Hall press release doesn’t mention it but perhaps the vegetables grown are used in school lunches?
