There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling.

Mediterranean Gardening Association events

Hello everyone,

Exciting news of the next International Spring Conference Weekend, we will be visiting the Lisbon area and Roy and Sue Lancaster are able to be with us once again. The theme for this event will be ‘The Portuguese Garden’ and we will be visiting some of the best historic and private gardens in the area.

There will be illustrated talks on the historical context for Portuguese gardens and on the Plant Hunters of the Past and their impact on our plant choices.

Garden visits will include Monserrate Park and Palace in Sintra with the opportunity to visit the recently restored Mexico garden which was the subject of the talk by Gerald Luckhurst in March this year.

The dates are later than usual to allow Roy to join us so we have booked the weekend of  1st to 3rd May 2015 for this special event, the gardens should be looking fabulous. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in taking part as we will shortly have to start reserving hotel rooms at our venue near to Sintra. This is  a holiday weekend here in Portugal so we will have to be quick to get the best deals. Full details will be sent out before the New Year but please keep the date free and let me know if you are interested so that we have an idea of numbers.

The next event will be an Open Garden Weekend on the Algarve at our home and garden with the opportunity to purchase plants, books etc., look round the garden and have garden gossip over tea and buns. This will be over two days on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December from 11.00 to 4.00pm
Directions available on request and more info in the newsletter.

Our last event for 2014 is a special meeting for MGA members and their guests on December 16th in Almancil.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Garden Fair this year, we had a magnificent and record breaking attendance. This proves that Mediterranean gardening is as popular as ever and good quality plants and information are always worth an outing !

Please pass this message and our newsletter onto anyone who may be interested.

Very best wishes for the new gardening year ahead,

Announcement - its not Goodbye ...

It is with some regret that Carol and I wish to resign our position as organiser helpers of this wonderful club.

We are looking for volunteers to take over our roles of organisers, and to work with both Cindy and Judith in running the club. Our reasons for handing over to others, is because we both feel that we are running out of time and would like to devote more of our energy into the care and maintenance of our own garden. There is so much more that we have yet to do.

Also, we feel, that new faces will bring new ideas that can only benefit the club and make it better and stronger.

We would like this to take effect from the end of this year. So, please give it some consideration, and should anyone feel able to take on this role, please email  Cindy (cindyjones19@hotmail.com ) or Judith (sunley.judith@btinternet.com )

In the meantime we would like to thank everyone for the wonderful support you have shown over the last years. It is our greatest wish that the club should continue and prosper.

We will still be members of the club and would wish to attend meetings and garden visits.

Please give this your earnest consideration.

Thank you.

Carol and Greg.

Editor

My husband Tom and I came across the Axarquia Garden Club last year when we moved to Sayalonga, last June, on the recommendation of Terry and Jenny. We were keen to come along to meetings to make some new friends, to learn about gardening in a much hotter climate, and to visit member's gardens. And we have enjoyed the meetings very much since then.

It is hard to image meetings without Carol and Gregg at the helm, (pictured above at the Summer picnic) driving meetings forward, providing inspiration and horticultural expertise. But thankfully, they are still carrying on as club members.

I hope it isn't presumptuous as a new member for me to express thanks for everything Greg and Carol have done over the last 5 or so years, and of course there is plenty of time for members to express their own thanks.

So  now its time for some other members to step up to help us keep a lively programme of activities to continue the good work they have started.

So please get in touch...

Be rid of Processionary caterpillars

A New, Important and Exciting Product now in stock to rid ourselves of the problem for home-owners of processionary caterpillars by a once-yearly injection treatment.

Easy to apply, it protects your pines, pets and children by killing the caterpillars whilst in the nest so that they don´t come down to ground. It is more environmentally friendly because it avoids aerial spraying - only the affected pines are treated.

A selected insecticide is injected into a pressurised bottle of accelerator and this is then injected into the pine and left for 3 hours to be absorbed. A single treatment costs €15 per tree to give one year of protection or buy a 4-pack for €46.

Come and see us for more details and we will explain the process to you.

Act quickly because it needs to be applied before the caterpillars move down the trunk of the pine. From now until approx. mid-January is the ideal application time.

Refreshment update - meeting 11 November 10.55

Sadly no-one volunteered to take on the role of refreshment provider for tomorrow's meeting.

So if we are thirsty we will have to meet up elsewhere after the meeting for refreshments.
Don't forget  the meeting is being held at the Centro de Juventud (Youth Centre) which is next to the Correos in Competa - on the approach road to the Competa swimming pool.

Please Note: The meeting will start 5 minutes earlier so that we can honour a silence at 11.00 for Remembrance Day.
As parking is relatively limited by the Youth Centre, it is advisable to park in the square as usual.
See you tomorrow

Change of time and venue - Garden Club meeting Tuesday 11 November 10.55 am

Unfortunately, the Salon de Actos in Competa is still being used for the wood carving exhibition and so we have to change the venue for next Tuesday's Garden Club meeting.

We will now meet at the Centro de Juventud (Youth Centre) which is next to the Correos in Competa - on the approach road to the Competa swimming pool.

Please Note: The meeting will start 5 minutes earlier so that we can honour a silence at 11.00 for Remembrance Day.

Volunteer needed

As there is no cafĂ© within the vicinity of the Youth Centre we are looking for a volunteer to man the tea and coffee urn.  If you are able to help out in this way please contact Cindy Jones to make arrangements to collect the cups and urn from Cindy and to buy the milk, coffee/tea and biscuits (costs to be refunded from Club funds) and bring them along to the youth centre around 10.30 in order to set up.

Cindy can be contacted on cindyjones19@hotmail.com. She wont be in on Sunday until around 4 pm.
On Monday she is out during the morning but Graham will be at home.

Editor's note

If you volunteer please let me know too and I can advertise the availability of refreshments at the meeting through the blog on sunley.judith@btinternet.com

If we have no volunteers there will be no refreshments.

Remembrance Day suggestion - start the November meeting early?

Hi folks,
there has been a suggestion from Maggie added as a comment to the meeting details blog entry - see below - that we start the meeting 5 minutes early on 11 November as it is Remembrance day.

Our meeting is scheduled to start at 11.00 am.

I'm sure I am not the only AGC member who immediately thinks of the relevance of the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Perhaps we could ask members to arrive five minutes early and hold a two minute silence in memory of those who allowed us to live this wonderful life.

Maggie Wood

I am new to the role of Editor and I am not sure if comments to previous posts are circulated again, which is why I am adding this as a new post.

What do you think?
