September meeting - change of date

Please note that the date of our September meeting has changed to the third Tuesday in September; Tuesday 15th September when we will be visiting Kitty's Garden, near Otivar, North of Almunecar.

Full details to be issued shortly.

We would be interested to know how many members would wish to attend and take their car and offer any spare seats to other members, and how many members would wish to attend as a passenger in another member's car. We are evaluating whether we would need to book a coach - which obviously adds to the expense.

Please email the editor at sunley.judith@btinternet.com to advise

Whether you are interested in attending and:
Whether you would be prepared to drive, or
Whether you would hope to be driven.

Typically we request that passengers make a contribution to the fuel costs of the driver.

Club library

I am delighted to announce that our Garden Club Library will continue as Olgi has kindly volunteered to be our new librarian taking over from Astrid and Peter.

Many thanks to Astrid and Peter for their help and thank you to Olgi for volunteering so services can be continued.

And a good time was had by all... Garden Club Picnic

Some 42 members and friends enjoyed the Garden Club's Annual Summer Picnic on 11 August in the delightful garden of our splendid hosts, Linda and Chris Payne.

For those that were unable to attend for various reasons - you missed a treat!

Some club members took the opportunity to take a tour of the garden, and admire the vegetable plot, vines and olives. This truly is a very large garden bursting with plants and original features like the grape drying beds.

Chris showed some of us his banana plants, explaining the fruiting process, and where the flowers continue to flourish, although there will be no more bananas fruiting.

As always the members all contributed towards the "Pot Luck Picnic" and wow what a superb spread appeared, lots of very different, extremely tasty recipes from Spicy Meatballs, Indian & Thai food, Pizzas, Salads to just about everything!!!

And there were some tasty dessert treats too, including sampling fresh Lychees.

Members tucked in and sampled the array of food, also enjoying the wine provided through club funds.

In addition, members had the opportunity to sample 2 cartons of delicious wine - 8L red and 8L white - donated to the Club by Vinomar in Torre del Mar. Thanks David and Anna for obtaining this donation. What a great chance to taste the wine. Hopefully members may wish to buy some more for drinking at home.

If you haven't yet visited Vinomar you will be surprised by the huge range of wines in such a small shop, and the owner is really knowledgeable, confidently recommending wines to suit your palette and pocket.

Address: C/ Piscis, 1b, 29740 Torre del Mar, M├ílaga
Phone:952 54 58 04

Geoff Murrell provided the musical entertainment and whilst it was a very hot evening, a few members did dance on Chris's newly raked  dance floor. What a shame that this is one of Geoff's last sessions in entertainment, he's giving it up! He certainly did the Club proud!

Jo also joined Geoff for a couple of songs and then entertained us on her own to much applause.

Thanks to David for taking some great photos, here is a selection. David has said he can provide un compressed photos on request if you would like one. Please contact him on info@vetiverspain.com

I am sure all members who attended would share my thanks to Chris and Linda as our delightful hosts for making us so welcome.

Note from Editor
Linda has asked me to thank everyone for bringing such a lovely and delicious array of food and for taking everything away with you, there was very little to do at the end.

However, she has also advised that 3 items were left behind if anyone wants to claim them:

1.  Pink plastic plate
2.  White, German porcelain plate with pretty motif round the edge
3.  Blue plastic knife

Blogging platform problems

For those garden club members that look forward to Digame daily, you may have heard of the problems Jane has been having?

I haven't had a Digame newsletter daily email for days, and I check the website instead each day for an update here http://digame-torrox.blogspot.com/. Follow this link if you are also missing the daily updates. You can find the link at the foot of the last Digame email you have received.

Why am I telling you this?

Well the garden club uses the same blogger platform for our newsletter. As I understand it there are problems with Google support, and this is why we have stopped receiving the Digame daily updates.

This might also prove to be a problem for publishing the Axarquia Garden Club newsletter, and I will keep you posted if we will need to find a new platform and re-registering of club members on the new platform.

Watch this space please....

Summer picnic - have you replied yet?

Thanks to club members who have contacted me about the annual Summer picnic being held at the lovely house of Chris and Linda Payne - find more details and directions by clicking here Summer picnic

Are you attending?
If so please bring along a plate of finger food to place on the central table for everyone to share.

The food needs to be either, finger or something that can easily be eaten via plastic cutlery/paper plates!!!!

As a guide, bring anything you would like to eat at a picnic, as long as it is ‘sharing’ food.  Quiches, salads, plate of sausage rolls or nice sandwiches, that sort of thing.  Desserts are always popular too but nothing that will ‘spoil’ or melt.

It’s extremely useful to bring serving utensils if your dish needs serving.

The club provides red/white wine and water but obviously you are welcome to bring your own favourite drink/tipple along!!!

In addition, the club provides paper plates/plastic cutlery/napkins and back by popular demand, musical entertainment from Geoff Murrell.

Linda has advised that it would be helpful if members attending bring folding picnic tables or similar and a couple of folding chairs.

Have you replied?

As courtesy to our hosts, please let us know if you are joining us

Summer Picnic

Linda and Chris Payne have once again, kindly volunteered to host our annual Garden Club Summer Picnic on Tuesday, 11th August, 2015 at 7pm.
As longer serving members know and hopefully our newer members will enjoy, it’s always a casual, fun evening based on the idea of an  American Pot Luck Supper.”

So please bring along a plate of finger food to place on the central table for everyone to share.

Also as the garden has only limited paths or hard surfaces, it is all rock based and the garden is made out of the old drying beds, so flat or very comfortable shoes are a must.

There is no ‘end’ time, especially if it is warm and people want to sit about and chat after the music has finished.  If anyone wants a swim, bring your swimwear and towels with you!

What do I need to do now?

As courtesy to our hosts, please let us know if you are joining us
by Wednesday 5th August
and let me know the following information

- How many are attending in your car?
- Do you have any spaces to give a lift to a club member?
- Would you like a lift to the picnic?
- Do you want to meet up by Portichuello at approximately 7 pm on the Ridge Road to follow a guide car to Chris and Linda's house.

Directions
It is not easy to find so if people do not know the area, or the tracks, it would be best to arrange to meet at Portichuello’s corner and all come together.  About 7 p.m. would be fine.

If anyone would like to ‘park’ in the laybay at the top of the track, we can arrange for someone to meet them there and guide them down, or even park there and come down in another vehicle.

For independent souls, here goes….
  • Follow the road from Portichuello towards Sayalonga until it goes uphill quite steeply, past Casa de la Mesa where it bends to the right.  Shortly after this the road divides at a fork.  TURN LEFT down the concrete ‘bit’ - there are lots of house names on this corner.
  • Stay on this road , it is not a track, (quite winding, for about 10 minutes) until you see some electricity boxes on your right hand side and a row of conifers next to them, the road starts to bear left here and there is a house up on your left with a steep slope
  • Go down the turning on your right AFTER the conifers (not the one by the boxes).  If you come to a lay bay with a sea view you have gone past it
  • There is a little road marker which says Loma Sepultura and we will put our Garden Club sign out here, with some balloons.  Do not miss this turn.  There is now a mile to go and it is all down hill.
  • Stay on the track, there is a little bit of concrete, passing Casa La Colina on your right.  After the next bend you will see Casa Salsa on the right then a long white wall of Finca Mojito. (then you will know you are on the right track).  The track then goes right , stay on the same track, ignore the Casa los Dos signs on the left.
  • Keep going down , you will pass Casa Raimundo on your left hand side.  We will put some balloons here, just to reassure you.  The track bears left and you will see the gates of ‘Olive Hills’ in front of you.  Keep going down.
  • After that you cannot really go anywhere else but down to us.  After leaving Olive Hills on your left there is another sharp right turn and the corner is not very good.  Take care.  There are no more houses for about half a mile but keep going.  This part of the track is quite a good surface.  At no stage can you see Chris and Linda's Finca!…. but you will arrive in their garden.

August meeting - Summer picnic 11 August

Chris and Linda Payne have kindly volunteered to be our hosts for the
annual Summer celebration at their delightful garden in the Competa campo
    on Tuesday 11 August.

New members may not know that we hold an annual picnic and visit the gardens of a club member every August. Because of the hot weather the August meeting is held in the evening.

Members are asked to bring food to the picnic, for example salads, savouries or desserts and we take "Pot Luck". The club provides wine and drinks.

It can sometimes be helpful to bring picnic chairs and tables too. I will let you know if they are needed for the meeting this year in my next update.

This is an early notification of this year's picnic. I will be posting more details in due course, together with directions. The garden is a little off the beaten track, but Tom and I have managed to drive there, so it can be done.

Keep your eyes peeled for the further details, when I will also be asking  for a reply indicating if you will be attending.

July meeting - Plants that changed the world - Sue Rodgers

Editor - Apologies for the delay in posting the visit report. I have only just got back from the UK (which is why Tom and I missed the meeting)

On arrival at Salon de Actos, it was clearly "out of order" for a meeting due to the workmen cutting picture tiles to place outside the Town Hall so the group were switched to a room in "Fernans" old bar.

Thanks to the following members for their help in getting the room ready for our meeting;  Gill for sorting out the much needed air conditioning, Steve for acquiring tables, Linda for sourcing refreshments from Aliprox and everyone for moving the chairs!!!!

Cindy welcomed everyone to the meeting and had received a number of apologies due to many members being back in the UK so we were a much smaller group of 14.

Sadly Cindy announced that Peter and Astrid are away for a number of meetings later in the year and therefore feel they have to "give up" handling the club's library.  The club urgently needs some volunteers to take over this role and if no-one indicates an interest by the next meeting on 11 August, then regretfully the library will discontinue.  If you are interested, please contact Cindy, or Peter and Astrid who will explain what is involved.

Cindy then introduced Sue Rodgers, our speaker for the meeting whose props did not include a single plant but an interesting selection of articles to include; a minature glass house, a can of coke cola, a bottle of tonic water, cotton tee-shirt,  and a rubber. Sue's subject was "Plants that have changed the World"  which everyone enjoyed as it was so informative and interesting.

Sue also brought along a very comprehensive book "Fifty Plants that have changed the Course of History" by Bill Law.  If the club finds members to run the library then Cindy will purchase the book for us.

Calling any succulent experts out there

So far I have had no replies to Linda Payne's question about the shrub pictured below. Super big picture posted to aid in identification.

Having taken a cutting from a garden visit in Spain some 12 years ago, Linda has found that it has since grown happily in her garden to a sizeable shrub.

A further cutting taken from this shrub a couple of years ago is growing happily on the courtyard wall, and has flowered!  The original shrub has never flowered.

Who can identify what it is please?

Update AAR fund raising from our Garden Club visit on 9 June

Here's a big thanks to all of the Garden Club members who visited the gardens at La Calera, Los Romanes on 9 June, and bought plants and refreshments to add to the Club's generous donation to AAR for the opportunity to visit the gardens.

Our hostess, Stephanie Mock has asked me to update club members

" Please say a big thank you to the club.
We raised a grand total of 121.66 euro for AAR!!"

    Please identify this succulent

Can anyone in the garden club give me the name of this succulent please?

I 'pinched' it from a garden visit in Spain, long before the Club started must be 12 years ago, and I have grown it in the garden to a sizeable shrub.

I took a cutting a couple of years ago and put it up on the courtyard wall, it has flourished and now even flowered!  The original shrub has never flowered.

    Many thanks
    Linda Payne

Please reply to the editor on sunley.judith@btinternet.com if you know the answer.
