Mediterranean Gardening Association – Portugal - upcoming events

Here is our latest newsletter and event info, with a cordial invitation to anyone wishing to participate in the events of the Mediterranean Gardening Association – Portugal . Our latest newsletter - More here

If your group would like to think about a visit to the Algarve we have some lovely gardens for you to visit and some good plant nurseries, you should be able to see some info on these on our spangly new web site but let me know if you want any more info.

The January newsletter is a bumper edition with news on events coming up over the next few months, news of past events and news of a fabulous new book on the Orchids of the Algarve by Sue Parker.

Our 2015 International Spring Conference takes place in Lisbon from 1-3 May. Please check out the website to download more details and the booking form. www.mediterraneangardeningportugal.org

We have a great panel of speakers we have lined up for you and the opportunity to visit some stunning private gardens in the Sintra/Colares area near Lisbon. We were really spoilt for choice as there are also many good botanic and public gardens in the Lisbon area.

Our next event will be the long awaited chance to discuss Lawn Alternatives – what to do instead ? on February 27th in Almancil on the Algarve. We are very lucky to have the chance to visit some gardens and hear about some case studies from two experienced landscape and garden designers, Jean-Claude Defrance and Marilyn Medina Ribeiro. The day will begin with the screening of the online talk from Olivier Filippi on the same topic with some ravishing photos of gardens without lawns. Places are limited so please let me know if you would like to take part.

The development of the  new web site continues with long hours of hard work from our two main volunteers, Ben Hurst and Richard Hickman. Please take the opportunity to have a look and let us know your comments. We are actively seeking contributions so send me your garden photos and stories to share.

www.mediterraneangardeningportugal.org  There will be new pages added and new formats for some of the pages so keep looking out for improvements and changes.

There is also exciting news of our first Spring Plant Sale on April 11th near Silves. An opportunity to involve plant nurseries from the western side of the Algarve and also, as a special treat for MGAP members, we will open the fair one hour early with entry limited to members and guests only. We hope this will give members the chance to talk to the nurseries about their plants and learn more about them.

I hope we will meet up at an event over the coming months, and we hope as many of you as possible will be able to come and participate in our first ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on March 25th.

Best wishes,
Rosie Peddle

Starting time for our visit to Torrox Campo and Dave and Gill Armstead's organic garden.

For all those wondering what time to meet in Torrox for the tour of Dave and Gill Armstead's garden, please be at the meeting point for 10.45 am.

And please don't forget to email Cindy Jones at cindyjones19@hotmail.com  by Thursday 5th February to advise her :-

- if you can join us and
- whether you are a car driver, if so how many passengers you can accommodate  or
- whether you need a lift.

Please do not "reply button" to this email.

Directions

Drive down the A7207  Competa - Torrox  road.

At the first roundabout at the bottom of the road, turn right signposted A15-E7 Malaga.

Follow this road for approximately 300 meters, around a bend, where on the right you will see some materials in a builders yard and usually logs for sale.

The Torrox football pitch will be down, on your left.

Directly after this material, turn right where there is a line of rubbish bins.

Dave will meet us here at around 10.45 am and transfer us in his mini bus to the end of the track.

There is room to leave a few cars here but probably better to leave as few as possible and share the journey down.

February meeting - Tuesday 10 February

This months outing is a return visit to Torrox Campo where last year, a few of us thoroughly enjoyed a tour of Dave and Gill's organic garden.  We must have been well behaved as we have been invited back, actually that's not strictly true, we asked them to entertain us again.  This time we have the added bonus of the tour being led by Mick, who is a WWOOFer (Worldwide Organisation of Organic Farms) and their resident winter farm manager.

Dave and Gill Armstead have kindly offered to serve refreshments, so I would like an idea of numbers for our visit.

Please email me Cindy Jones at cindyjones19@hotmail.com  by Thursday 5th February and advise;-

- if you can join us and
- whether you are a car driver, if so how many passengers you can accommodate  or
- whether you need a lift.

Correction to date of our next meeting!! 10 February

Thanks to the eagle eyed Greg who spotted my double typing error publicising the date of the next ACG meeting, which is a visit to an organic garden.

Our hosts are Dave and Gill Armstead and their garden is in the campo of Torrox, (nearer to the pueblo than the coast).

The club meets the second Tuesday of each month, and of course, our next meeting is in FEBRUARY. So we meet again on Tuesday 10 February and not Tuesday 10 March.

So please do put the correct date in your diary. Many apologies for the typing error.

Have you ever thought of trying Short mat bowls?

Tom and I are members of the Almijara Bowling club in Nerja, which has just moved to a new venue, and is now open to new members.

Flyer for the club

Tom competes with the Club President in the Singles Competition

Looking down 4 of the rinks
The Bowling Club now offers 6 bowling rinks. It shares the same site as La Racqueta Tennis and Paddel Club and there is a convenient café and restaurant also on site. The new site is being officially opened on 27 January 2015.

If you would like to give the sport a try, the club has bowls and footwear that you can borrow, and charges 5 Euros per session for each visitor. If anyone would like to give the game a try Tom and I would be glad to introduce you to the club. There are club sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10.45. When you become a full member you can practice and play on any day of the week.

For more information please contact me (Judith Sunley) by email on sunley.judith@btinternet.com or telephone 644 073 586.

Future visits - your views please

The team behind the scenes have an outline programme for the year of visits to member's gardens, also visits to nearby botanical gardens, or other regional gardens of note, together with talks from experts on various themes suggested by members.

Our February visit is to an Organic Garden - more details to follow ....

We would like to know what would you like to see included in the programme?

Often the gardens we visit have been suggested by members - so do you have any suggestions of places we might visit, or favourite gardens you would like to re-visit?

Typically when it is very hot (July) we arrange a talk.
In August we have the club picnic, and in December we have the Christmas lunch.

We usually have one long haul visit when we hire in a coach, but the other gardens in the programme are around an hour's maximum or so drive away. Our members with cars are usually happy to take passengers for those members without transport.

Please let me know by email to sunley.judith@btinternet.com your ideas. All ideas gratefully received.

Please don't just "reply" to the newsletter as the email then goes to Jane Kirk who used to edit the newsletter (we don't know how to undo this!) and then she has to forward it to me.
Much quicker to email me direct thanks.

Kind Regards

Judith Sunley

Visit to Viveros Guzman 13 January

There was an excellent turn out for the visit to Viveros Guzman and 19 club members arrived at the centre for 11.00 am. It was Tom and my first visit and we left with our car stuffed with plants, just leaving just enough space to squeeze in Linda who travelled with us from Sayalonga. We had expected that the plants would be more expensive, and were pleasantly surprised by the price of the plants we bought.

We have Gill Jordan to thank for the excellent driving directions, and taking copious photos, and of course Cindy for organizing us. Mave has written a short report for those club members who were not able to attend. You missed a treat, and I am sure Tom and I will be visiting Viveros Guzman again.

The raffle prize this month was won by Steve Brogan.

Our Visit to Guzman’s 13th January

This was my first visit to Guzman’s and wow what a “wonderland” to behold, now was that because they were still dismantling the Christmas decorations or because of the range of stock that they carry.  The latter I think.

Realising it was more than a garden centre as we wandered past the interior design shop we headed for the “medicinal section”.  The aromas in there were amazing.  To the rear of that section were shrubs, Phormiums and a good selection of climbers.

The cactus area proved a great favourite as they catered for all of the colours in all of the sizes.

Awash with colour from the spring selection of primulas, petunias, carnations, gazanias, chrysanthemums to name but a few attracted us next.

Then pots, well I don’t think I have ever seen such a selection of both glazed and unglazed, I could not begin to tell you how many types and shapes there were.

Garden furniture, water features, fencing and barbeques were also very prominent along with the Bonsai selection.

A choice of indoor plants was next on the agenda, what couldn’t you find in there??

I just have to say that it was a great few hours but we really do need to teach Gill what to do with hanging baskets!!!

Can you give a home to these beautiful labradors?

May I apologise to Garden Club members if using this forum to publicise these 2 dogs is not appropriate.

If you know me you know I am a dog lover, and that Tom and I have just rescued a lovely mastin/boxer cross abandoned in Sayalonga village. He is a very lively young lad and is now around 6 months old.

We can't take in any more.

A friend is leaving Spain at the end of January and cannot take her 2 Labradors with her. She is devastated.

They are shown in the picture above.

They have been microchipped and spayed /castrated and are up to date with their vaccinations.

Their names are Freddy and Pela. Freddy is around 9 and Pela around 4. Ideally they will be re-homed together.

Can you help?

Could you give these beautiful dogs a home, or do you know someone who could?

If you are interested in more information please contact me  on sunley.judith@btinternet.com and I will put you in contact with the owner.

Thank you.
