We look forward to seeing you there.

If members wish to bring visitors to the presentation we request a contribution of 3 Euros per visitor towards our speaker expenses.

Directions to Salon de los Actos
  • Most people will need to park in the village carpark in the centre where the Saturday Market is held. As parking is a bit of a premium at the moment, you may need to explore wider afield for a parking place.
  • From this village car park walk up the hill (past Todo Papel on your left and Cajamar bank on your right) walking up towards the Church Tower
  • Head up the steep hill called La Rampa towards this prominent, brown, Moorish Tower of the Church.
  • Half way up, on the left of this hill is a small Eroski supermarket
  • Opposite Eroski is the Town Hall Noticeboard on the Wall - (The Ayuntamientio itself is  up a flight of white steps.)
  • No need to ascend, enter the building on the ground floor where you find the Salon de Los Actos.

Update AAR fund raising from our Garden Club visit on 9 June

Here's a big thanks to all of the Garden Club members who visited the gardens at La Calera, Los Romanes on 9 June, and bought plants and refreshments to add to the Club's generous donation to AAR for the opportunity to visit the gardens.

Our hostess, Stephanie Mock has asked me to update club members

" Please say a big thank you to the club.
We raised a grand total of 121.66 euro for AAR!!"

Please identify this succulent

Can anyone in the garden club give me the name of this succulent please?

I 'pinched' it from a garden visit in Spain, long before the Club started must be 12 years ago, and I have grown it in the garden to a sizeable shrub.

I took a cutting a couple of years ago and put it up on the courtyard wall, it has flourished and now even flowered!  The original shrub has never flowered.

Many thanks
Linda Payne

Please reply to the editor on sunley.judith@btinternet.com if you know the answer.

Drought friendly gardens - some inspiration

I came across this article featured by House Beautiful Magazine which you may enjoy reading for inspiration?

http://www.mydomaine.com/drought-friendly-plants/?src=spr_FBPAGE&spr_id=1451_190918174

Just in case the link only opens for club members who are on Facebook I have included a selection of the gardens highlighted.

Inspired to remove the grass from her own home’s yard, designer Karen Fabian replaced the lawn with low-water plants that reminded her of the landscaping at her family’s home in France. Plant selections include olive trees, lavender, and bougainvillea, mixed with gravel and decomposed granite used for walking surfaces.

A vast variety of texture, colour, shape, and height make this garden of cacti, succulents, and native plants visually arresting.

Located in a drought-plagued region of Australia, this dry garden, which according to Gardenista is only watered four times a year, is open to the public and features hundreds of various flowers, trees, and plants imported from climates with hot summers and mild winters.

This maximalist garden features a variety of architectural and sculptural plants placed in close proximity resulting in a layered and unique design. The mix of plant heights and shapes keeps the eye moving and the subtle variations in colour help create depth.

Garden Club visit to 9 June - La Calera

30 members visited the garden.

Cindy welcomed back Annette Lee, returning member to the club.  Cindy also introduced Sharon White who joined a couple of months ago.

Apologies from Astrid & Peter so no library also apologies from Judith & Tom, having new boiler installed, workman everywhere!!!

Thanks to Jacqui who organised the raffle.

Bernie Marsh was delighted to win the raffle prize; Kniphofia  Uvaria

Cindy wishes to apologise to the members who purchased their refreshments, there must have been a misunderstanding as the club paid for everyone to have tea/coffee etc through their large donation to Stephanie for Axarquia Animal Rescue AAR.

Thanks to Gill Jordan for the visit report and photos. If other club members have taken photos you can email them to me for posting on the blog.

Stephanie has posted a thanks to the club for our visit on the AAR facebook site

"Just had a lovely visit from the Axarquia Garden Club who made a donation and bought tea, coffee and plants.

Can't wait to see how much we have raised in the tin."
 Visit report from Gill Jordan

We had a good turnout for our visit to La Calera, with 26 members attending.

Our hosts Stephanie and Terry kindly opened their gardens for us to stroll around and, quite frankly, marvel at the sheer amount of work that they have put in to rebuilding the property, and in to making some lovely garden and seating areas for us to enjoy.

Stephanie explained that when they first arrived 12 years ago, the houses were pretty much complete ruins, and whilst rebuilding them, they lived in a caravan!!

The gardens have been made using the most of all the natural resources available, using the natural stones for walls, edging, and paths throughout.

Stephanie and Terry were very generous with not only their time in answering all our questions, but also by happily digging up any plant that anyone requested, don’t know that I would be quite that generous!!!

After wandering around the gardens, we were able to purchase some plants that Stephanie had provided, and buy refreshments, with the proceeds being donated to Animal Rescue.

Jacquie did a sterling job in selling raffle tickets for a much sought after plant, Kniphofia  Uvaria, which Bernie went on to win, lucky lady!!!

All in all, yet another very enjoyable Garden Club Visit.

Cheers Gill xx

Trip to Kitty Harri's Gardens on 16th June 2015

Through members Louise and Doug Cawson we have become aware of another garden club which is based in the area by Lake Vinuela.

This group meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month and has trips, 'at homes', an annual show and their general meeting at the Algarrobo garden centre on the A356 from Velez Malaga to Lake Vinuela.

Cindy and I are looking to meet up with the organiser Janet Bluck, to see how the clubs could support each other.

In the meantime Janet has invited our members to participate in a trip she has organised to Kitty Harri's Sculpture Gardens on 16th June 2015.

The weekday entry fee to the gardens is 12 Euros per person and includes a glass of wine, beer or soft drink, plus tapas and/or coffee and sweet snacks. Both will be available.

There are now nearly 100 sculptures in their two acre garden, and a large variety of trees and plants.

There are plenty of seats, benches and shady areas.

You can find more information about the sculpture garden from Kitty Harri's website here http://www.kittyharri.com/

Janet has booked a coach for a trip on 16th June with Pareja, the costs are 10 euro per head if she fills 35 seats and about 8 euro per head if she can sell 50 seats.

She hopes to achieve at least 35 seats which would make the total cost 22 euro per person including entrance fee, wine, tapas etc and the coach.

Here are the coach collection points and times :
  • 09.45 am from Mis Tapitas (Romero) Puente don Manuel
  • 10.00 am fromEl Cruce/ Trapiche car park and
  • 10.15am from Lidl, Algarrobo.
The coach will leave the gardens on the return journey at approx 3.00pm

If you are interested in joining this trip and wish to reserve a place please contact Janet direct by Friday 12th June at the latest please, either by

Sad news and Condolences

It is with great sadness that I inform garden club members of the unexpected death of Cindy Jones' partner, Graham Nursaw in the operating theatre on 18 May. Graham had initially recovered well from his previous heart surgery and had this further operation scheduled as he was beginning to feel unwell again.

Graham was Cindy's soul mate and he will also be sorely missed by their friends and family. His funeral service on 25 May in Competa was very well attended and was a moving celebration of their life together. Many garden club members were in attendance at the service and also at the celebration of Graham's life at the Alberdini hotel afterwards.

On behalf of the garden club I wish to pass on to Cindy the sincere condolences of garden club members, and our support for her in the future.
